2016 Spent Ensuring That Governor, Public Are Aware of Ballot Concerns

By Shaun Rundle, Legislative & Region Affairs Representative.

Governor Jerry Brown is well aware of CPOA’s positions on the public safety measures on next week’s ballot. When Prop 57, his parole eligibility measure was introduced last February, CPOA’s board of directors quickly voted to oppose it. Just this week CPOA leaders also joined law enforcement colleagues on a conference call with him regarding Prop 64 and marijuana legalization. Over the course of 2016 CPOA has also participated in legislative hearings, statewide press briefings, community events, and released our Public Safety Voter Guide to address the above measures as well as Props 62 and 66 about the death penalty in California.

The criminal justice system in California has been dealt serious blows over the last few years with the passage of AB 109 (prison realignment) in 2011 and Prop 47 in 2014. The propositions we have opposed on this year’s ballot will only further decrease the safety in communities across the state. CPOA played an active role in ensuring that Governor Brown, the Legislature, and the public know the concerns that law enforcement has with these measures.
