Students are not required to have prior experience handling a police canine.

The easiest way to register a group of individuals is using our online system. To choose group registration, click the registration link at the top of this page. Login to our system or create an account. Then, on the registration page, click the second blue button indicating group registration for your agency. On the following screen, click the green button that says “Register an Attendee” and search for attendees you wish to register. Follow the prompts to complete the registration process.
All cancellations and substitutions MUST be in writing and directed to the CPOA Training Assistant at: email@example.com. All refunds will be processed within 30 days from the written date of the cancellation request.
Cancellations made 30 calendar days or more from the first day of your registered course will be refunded minus a $30 cancellation fee.
Cancellations made 29 calendar days to 10 calendar days from the first day of your registered course will receive a 50% refund.
Cancellations made 9 calendar days or less from the first day of your registered course are NOT eligible to receive a refund.
CPOA encourages you to make a substitution if a student cannot attend the course; substitutions will be accepted prior to the course in writing and on-site.

Captain Charles Husted – Sacramento Police Department
Captain Charles Husted has served at the Sacramento Police Department for 28 years. He currently manages the East Patrol Command. Prior management and supervisory assignments have included Crisis Negotiation Team Commander, Outreach & Engagement Section, North Command Executive Lieutenant, Internal Affairs, School Resource Officer Unit, and Gang Investigations Team. Captain Husted served as the President of the Sacramento Police Activities League and as a member of the California Peace Officers Association Training Committee and is a long-standing member of the POST Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted committee. Since 2008, Captain Husted has studied and provided instruction in Disproportionate Minority Contact and Implicit Bias curriculum to law enforcement, school district employees, faith-based groups, and community groups. Additionally, Captain Husted leads the Sacramento Police Department’s Fair and Impartial Policing training team and is a Procedural Justice trainer for the U.S. COPS Office national training team. Captain Husted’s career has been one focused on community service and compassion. He has a heart for assisting others and strives to bring diverse groups together for effective collaboration.
Lieutenant Steve Oliveira – Sacramento PD
Lt. Steve Oliveira joined the Sacramento Police Department in 1994. He was a Field Training Officer and worked assignments in Patrol, Problem Oriented Policing and Investigations, including the Homicide Unit. Steve was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and assigned to the Patrol Division. In 2006, he was selected as the supervisor of the K9 Unit where he not only managed the 9-member team, but handled two patrol trained German Shepherds during his tenure. His second K9 partner was cross-trained in Explosives/Firearm Detection and Article Searching. He was also assigned as a SWAT/K9 handler. Steve was promoted to Lieutenant in 2013 and has had assignments as a Watch Commander and managing the Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit. He currently oversees the Training Division, which includes the Sacramento Police Academy, EVOC, FTO Program and the In-Service Training Unit.
Bruce Praet, JD – Ferguson, Praet, & Sherman
Bruce Praet spent ten years as a police officer in Orange County working patrol, detectives and K9. After finishing law school, Bruce started as Assistant General Counsel at the Los Angeles Police Protective League. In 1987, he was a founding partner in the Orange County law firm of Ferguson, Praet & Sherman where he continues to specialize in defending officer involved shootings, K9 liability, pursuits and use of force cases for agencies and officers across the state in federal court. In 1998, Bruce and Gordon Graham founded Lexipol which continues to provide state-of-the-art customized policies for over 90% of law enforcement in California and more than 3000 agencies across the nation. Bruce also continues to serve on various POST committees and teach POST courses in K9 liability, Officer Involved Shootings, Internal Affairs and Executive Development.
