Course Description:

This exclusive class provides line-level officers the building blocks to grow into leadership positions through the belief that the most powerful way to grow as a leader is to become truly self-aware. Each student will build a foundation for individual and organizational growth using curated readings and two nationally recognized self-assessment profiles integrated with group introspective activities. A promotion to sergeant workshop is also included.

At the conclusion of the LDC, your agency can expect to gain an officer who has explored the leadership concepts of Character, Competence, Caring, and Trust, and who has examined ways to effect organizational change that inspires community trust and support.

This is an excellent opportunity to involve your agency in leadership development at a statewide level. Please encourage your command staff to carefully consider who would best represent your agency and benefit from the encouragement of leadership values.

Applicants will be evaluated based on criteria including membership in CPOA, interest in promoting, work performance and recommendations of supervisors or direct commanders.

*The 80 hours is split between two five-day weeks separated by several weeks.

Fall 2019 Instructors:

    David W. McGill

David W. McGill holds the rank of Deputy Chief of Police for the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD).  Prior to being hired by the NBPD, he served with the Los Angeles Police Department for over 25 years, working a variety of assignments including patrol and detectives, Anti-Terrorist Division, Internal Affairs Division, and as the Adjutant to the Chief of Staff.  David has taught Internal Affairs courses for several years and has been instrumental in updating CPOA’s Internal Affairs Manual.
David earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Pre-Medicine at the University of California at Irvine, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University at Long Beach.  He is a graduate of the West Point Leadership Program, California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Executive Development Course, and the 212th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.  David serves on many non-profit boards and foundations throughout Orange County in support of children and victims.  He has been a member of the California Peace Officers’ Association (CPOA) since 1997, and he is currently serving on the CPOA Board as its 1st Vice President. 

 

     Andrew Borrello

Andrew Borrello is a retired Police Captain and served with the San Gabriel Police Department for over 27 years. Andy is a certified California POST Master Instructor and graduate of Command College. He has been presenting law enforcement training in multiple subjects for over twenty years and specializes in career development, career advancement/promotion, and the promotional oral interview. Andy is the book author of the Police Promotion Super Course and his published articles have included topics such as leadership, management, career development, promotional testing, community policing, risk management, and ethics. Captain Borrello has served as a consultant DBA, POLICE PROMOTE and has taught thousands of law enforcement professionals through one-on-one consultations/coaching, seminars, keynote addresses, and large presentations for agencies and professional associations. Andy’s curriculum is unique in the industry, intense, and fun and it’s based on tangible simplicity, effectiveness, and real-world application.

   Rob Patton

Lieutenant Rob Patton has been with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years. During that time he has held a variety of assignments on the front line, as a supervisor and currently a manager.  Lieutenant Patton’s experience includes custody, patrol, detectives, gangs, fugitive apprehension, SWAT, detective bureau supervisor, internal affairs and watch commander.  Lieutenant Patton created and implemented an internal leadership development program within his organization.  He also possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership.  Lieutenant Patton graduated from the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, LAPD’s West Point Leadership Academy, and in 2019 he received the distinguished alumni award, from Sacramento State, for being a leader in law enforcement.  In addition, Lieutenant Patton is the founder and CEO of the Cro-Mag Leadership Corporation (https://cro-magleadership.com/)

Nominations:

Nominations are now OPEN. 

Police Officers, Deputies, and Corporals, and Investigators who have the support and approval of their supervisor and department chief executive, and who can meet the following conditions for attending CPOA’s Leadership Development Course:

  • Complete all reading assignments, and homework assignments
  • Commit to attending all 10 class sessions (two 40-hour weeks)
  • Agree to take part in all learning activities through active class participation

Registration fees: $1,175.00

Cancellation Policy:

Effective 8/1/18

All cancellations and substitutions MUST be in writing and directed to the CPOA Training Manager @ amacaluso@cpoa.org.  All refunds will be processed within 30 days from the written date of the cancellation request.

Cancellations made 30 calendar days or more from the first day of your registered course will be refunded minus a $100 cancellation fee.

Cancellations made 29 calendar days to 10 calendar days from the first day of your registered course will receive a 50% refund.

Cancellations made 9 calendar days or less from the first day of your registered course are NOT eligible to receive a refund.

*Registrants who cannot attend a course are strongly encouraged to find a substitution.

Substitution Policy:

CPOA encourages you to make a substitution if a student cannot attend the course; substitutions will be accepted prior to the course in writing.
