Legislators and Public Safety Leaders to Be Heard at Legislative Day

By Shaun Rundle, Legislative & Region Affairs Representative.

The biggest societal and public policy topics facing law enforcement will be discussed at the 25th Annual Law Enforcement Legislative Day event next month in Sacramento. In addition to hearing from lawmakers like Assemblyman Tom Lackey, a former CHP officer, attendees will engage in panel discussions with colleagues. Chief Cynthia Renaud of the Folsom Police Department and IACP is among the panelists lending their view to these important issues. Governor Brown and new California Attorney General Xavier Becerra have also been invited to speak to the group.

Assemblyman Lackey represents the 36th Assembly district, which covers Palmdale, Lancaster and portions of southern Kern County. Prior to serving in the Legislature he had a distinguished career with the California Highway Patrol. Mr. Lackey has been a strong voice for law enforcement in the Capitol, and since 2015 has introduced important legislation to fix Prop 47, allow for oral fluid screening of drugged driving violators, and reinstate felony charges for date rape drug possession. He now serves a Vice Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee and will lend his view into public safety priorities in the Legislature.

Confirmed to speak at Legislative Day is also Assemblyman Miguel Santiago of the 53rd District in Los Angeles. He also serves on the Assembly Public Safety Committee, and has worked on several pieces of legislation favorable to law enforcement, including addressing human trafficking, firearms lending, and victim incident reports.

Other public safety panels will help fill up the event and they will cover the important topics that law enforcement in California faces today. The public safety profession is, and must continue to be united in California, so register now and contribute to the conversation!
