Volunteer on a Committee

CPOA volunteer positions are open to all sworn, reserved, retired and professional staff members. Opportunities are for one-year positions, with the ability to remain active on the committee for longer periods of time in most cases.

Location: Teleconferences – 3 – 4 times per year

The Board Development Committee acts as the “scouting” arm for future CPOA leadership. It helps if committee members are active members within their region, as we rely on their input when considering individuals for the board. Additionally, the committee considers all nominations and votes to present a final slate to the Board of Directors and the CPOA members for vote. Committee meetings are typically via teleconference 3-4 times a year.

Location: Teleconference – 1 – 2 times per year.

The Awards Committee develops and oversees criteria for CPOA’s Annual Award’s Program, reviews award nominations and selects recipients for its annual Awards Program that recognizes acts of valor and distinction. Committee members must be available to take part in teleconferences and email conversations, as well as meet in person 1 -2 times per year. Well-rounded experience of evaluating submissions is helpful. Most past members have felt it an honor to serve on a committee that is able to recognize their peers at such a level.

Location: Teleconference – monthly conference calls.

The Law and Legislation Committee reviews current legislation having an impact on law enforcement/public safety. It determines whether the association supports, opposes or takes no position on specific pieces of legislation. These positions are then communicated to the Legislature and CPOA membership. Must be able to attend monthly conference calls with bills analysis, and annual in-person meeting at Legislative Summit.

Endorsements (a sub-group of the Law & Legislation Committee)
The Endorsements Task Force recommends candidates for CPOA endorsement during election years. Task Force meets via teleconference (primarily) on an as needed basis (dependent on endorsement requests) but typically no more than 4 times a year. We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the political process at both a local and/or statewide level and who maintain some level of current political awareness. This committee will most likely grow in focused activity as we approach the elections. The CPOA endorsement is a respected and coveted endorsement. This task force’s activity is important to the integrity of CPOA and its mission.

Location: Teleconference – 4 – 6 times per year.
