Course Description

CPOA has partnered with LEXIPOL co-founder Bruce Praet, Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) national instructor Rob Patton, and Echelon Front Leadership instructor Carlos Mendez for a four-hour seminar on use of force, peer intervention, and leadership development. 

This training is intended to address line level, supervisory, and managerial considerations as it relates to aspects of use of force peer intervention, and leadership.

Upon conclusion of the training, participants will have leadership strategies and tactics to effectively intervene in all aspects of policing, including cases of use of force.

Bruce Praet

Lexipol Co-Founder, Partner with Ferguson, Praet & Sherman.

Bruce Praet is the co-founder of Lexipol and a partner with Ferguson, Praet & Sherman, a law firm with over 30 years of specializing in defending police civil matters such as shootings, dog bites and pursuits while representing management in personnel matters. Bruce started his law enforcement career in 1973 as a police officer in Laguna Beach. In 1974, he moved to the Orange Police Department where he worked patrol, detectives, SWAT and K-9. After finishing law school, he went to work as an Assistant General Counsel to the Los Angeles Police Protective League and later served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Orange, exclusively handling police litigation. Bruce has been heavily involved with POST committees and curriculum and is a frequent presenter to federal, state and local law enforcement groups across the country.

Rob Patton

Lieutenant (Ret.), Sacramento County Sheriff's Office

Rob Patton is a retired Lieutenant from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office. His experience includes corrections, patrol, problem-oriented policing, metro detective, FBI gang task force, fugitive apprehension detective, SWAT, communications supervisor, detective bureau supervisor, internal affairs investigator, jail watch commander, and patrol services watch commander.

Upon retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, Rob served as a Law Enforcement Consultant with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), where he served as a Law Enforcement Consultant and Bureau Chief. He is currently partnered with the California Affiliated Risk Management Authorities to facilitate Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) training to police organizations.

 

Rob possesses a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in organizational leadership.  He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and LAPD’s West Point Leadership Academy.  Rob created and implemented a leadership development program for the Sheriff’s Office and received the Distinguished Alumni Service award at California State University Sacramento, for outstanding leadership in law enforcement.

Carlos Mendez

Echelon Front

Carlos Mendez is a retired Navy SEAL who started his Naval career as a medic with the Marines where he completed two deployments. Upon his completion of BUD/s he was assigned to SEAL Team One where he served as the medic, primary sniper, and point man and completed deployments to Southeast Asia, Iraq, Central America, and Afghanistan.

Carlos then served under Jocko as the lead instructor in charge of teaching Close Quarter Combat for all of the West Coast SEAL Teams. During his time there, Carlos was chosen for the prestigious Seaman to Admiral program through which the SEAL Teams cut the members away to complete their undergrad degree and come back as an officer. Former recipients of this award include Jocko Willink and Jonny Kim.

After completing his undergrad degree in finance at the University of San Diego, Carlos came back to complete two more deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as the Assistant Officer in Charge and the Officer in Charge at both SEAL Team Three and Special Reconnaissance Team One.

Carlos finished his Naval career as the Executive Officer for SEAL Training command. After separating from the service and before joining Echelon Front, Carlos completed his MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA and worked as an investment banker.

Cancellation Policy
Effective 8/1/18

All cancellations and substitutions MUST be in writing and directed to the CPOA Training Coordinator cpoa@cpoa.org. All refunds will be processed within 30 days from the written date of the cancellation request.

Cancellations made 30 calendar days or more from the first day of your registered course will be refunded minus a $30 cancellation fee.

Cancellations made 29 calendar days to 10 calendar days from the first day of your registered course will receive a 50% refund.

Cancellations made 9 calendar days or less from the first day of your registered course are NOT eligible to receive a refund.

*Registrants who cannot attend a course are strongly encouraged to find a substitution.



Substitution Policy

CPOA encourages you to make a substitution if a student cannot attend the course; substitutions will be accepted prior to the course in writing and on-site.

CPOA will not register anyone for a class unless payment has been received in full. If you are not able to provide payment with registration you may provide a credit card to hold the seat. However, all students must be paid in full 10 days prior to the class. If payment is not received and a card has been given to hold the seat, it will be charged.
