Course Description

Now, more than ever, law enforcement needs leaders who can motivate, inspire, and influence others to improve their organizations’ performance and recapture the trust of the public. Leadership Primer for Commanders gives you the tools to meet the demands of your city and its citizens by providing:
1. A solid grounding in core leadership foundational principles.
2. A detailed examination of the art of command and the science of control.
3. Realistic techniques for influencing organizational partners.

Instructors:

Robert Thompson – Chief of Police, Dixon Police Department

Robert started his career as a police officer with the St. Louis Police Department in 1994 and joined the FBI in 2002. After Quantico, Robert was assigned to the Sacramento Division of the FBI and worked on the Violent Crime/Major Offenders squad. He became the task force coordinator for the Safe Streets Violent Crime Task Force before being promoted to supervisory special agent.  Robert supervised the Special Operations squad in Sacramento, including all aviation and technical assets. In 2017 he was appointed chief of police for the Dixon Police Department.

Robert was an instructor in the FBI’s Leadership Development Program, a member and supervisor of the Sacramento FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Program, and taught crisis negotiation in California to state and local partners for over a decade. He is on the Officer Wellness Committee for Cal-Chiefs and is active in promoting physical and emotional officer wellness.

Travis Martinez – Assistant Chief, Redlands Police Department

Travis Martinez is currently a deputy chief with the Redlands Police Department. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and has presented at several international, national, and state conferences throughout the nation on how law enforcement can leverage technology to address robbery, burglary, and theft crime trends.   He has also taught POST approved classes on using GPS and automated license plate reader technology in several states. He is a POST Command College graduate and has completed the California Police Chiefs Association Executive Leadership Institute.  He has received many honors throughout his career including recently being named the 2021 Southern California Robbery Investigator of the year by the California Robbery Investigator’s Association.  For his efforts in helping the community address crime trends, the Redlands Police Department received the RISE Award as the 2015 Law Enforcement Agency of the Year at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference.

Who Should Attend:

This course is for Watch Commanders (Sergeant rank perhaps in small agencies) through Deputy Chiefs.

The easiest way to register a group of individuals is using our online system. To choose group registration, click the registration link at the top of this page. Login to our system or create an account. Then, on the registration page, click the second blue button indicating group registration for your agency. On the following screen, click the green button that says “Register an Attendee” and search for attendees you wish to register. Follow the prompts to complete the registration process.

Cancellation Policy:

All cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing. All cancellations are subject to a $15 administrative fee.
There will be no refund for cancellations received 15 days or less prior to the start date of the course. Refunds will not be given for no-shows.

Substitution Policy:

CPOA encourages you to make a substitution if a student cannot attend the course; substitutions will be accepted prior to the course in writing and on-site.

*Registration Policy:

CPOA will not register anyone for a class unless payment has been received in full. If you are not able to provide payment with registration you may provide a credit card to hold the seat. However, all students must be paid in full 10 days prior to the class. If payment is not received and a card has been given to hold the seat, it will be charged.
